Drama in real life

January 1st, 2014

There’s so much hyperbole in media today that I find myself getting immune to the headlines. Then something happens to me or my family members and I find my perspective changing in a heartbeat.
When the earthquake hit Japan in 2011, my son and his family were living just to the south of Tokyo. They definitely felt the tremors and were pretty much traumatized by the ordeal and all of the fears regarding the radiation that followed .Fortunately,by the time I heard about the major quake, my son had already emailed me – telling me they were okay.
Then, this November, my son-on-law’s family were ravaged by the typhoon in Tacloban. My son-in-law became my hero as he traveled to his hometown in order to help his family – including his father who is close to 90 years old. Fortunately, all family members survived, but some of their friends were not so lucky.
These experiences have helped me put priorities in perspective. I take so much of my personal situation for granted – the safety and conveniences that are part of daily life in the US.
2014 is here. One of my resolutions to to give thanks for the many advantages, blessings and privileges that permeate my life.
