Magna Cum Murder

November 9th, 2010

The last weekend in October is the traditional weekend for Magna cum Murder. Magna is a celebration of the mystery genre held in Muncie, Indiana, near the Ball State University. While attending Bouchercon 2009 in Indianapolis, I sat next to two women at the awards ceremony who sang the praises of Magna. I decided that I would have to put it on my list, and attended Magna for the first time this year.
It was a great experience. The speakers were excellent, and I had the opportunity to network with many mystery writers and fans. One thing about those who read and those who write mysteries—they are some of the nicest people in the world. I don’t know if it is because they get out all of their murderous urges vicariously, or for some other reason. But, I felt the same way when meeting with authors and fans at Bouchercon.
Magna’s attendees came from all over the country. Evidently there are many devotees who wouldn’t miss Magna. I think I’ll be adding myself to the list.
